Google Cloud and HCA Healthcare: what you need to know

> How this agreement impacts the world of health and technology

Last week, news broke that Google Cloud and HCA Healthcare Inc, a major U.S. national hospital chain, closed a $3 billion deal to develop healthcare algorithms from patient records and files.

HCA Healthcare has 2,000 outpatient centers and 186 hospitals in 21 states in the United States and with this agreement it will now have an advanced analytics platform and new machine learning models for scientifically based decision making. Joining Google Cloud will aim to strengthen support areas that can be integrated to improve workflow using acquired data and knowledge. For example, the purchase and sale of supplies, personnel management and physical plant operations.

This is not the first time HCA Healthcare has implemented technology into its processes. Currently, the hospital network has 90,000 mobile devices running tools created by the organization and other developers to support all staff providing care. Also earlier this year, it announced the formation of a new data consortium that allows other systems and health plans to gain access to HCA's data registry to improve COVID-19 treatment.

Six months ago, Google Cloud launched two data analysis tools with Artificial Intelligence for healthcare centers and institutions to speed up the review of large volumes of unstructured text: Healthcare Natural Language API and AutoML Entity Extraction for Healthcare.

Undoubtedly, technology is becoming more and more fundamental for the advancement of science and with it, healthcare. The implementation of a cloud of available data can be an accelerator for boosting the interoperability of information, which translates into more agile operations and a better quality of medical care.
